Pack those bags

I remember the one time that Randy and I came home from Haiti. We made the big mistake of scheduling the last flight out of Port Au Prince airport. Never, never, never should have done that and never would do that again. Well due to some problems in Haiti that we did not know about the airlines decided to just cancel our flight. Our friends had dropped us off at the airport and there they are not allowed in the airport with you so it is a drop and go sort of thing. Now in Haiti the airport does not stay open all night long like it does here in the states. After the last flight leaves they all go home and lock the airport up. So we were told we needed to leave the airport. I tried to call our friends but got no answer on their phones. So then I tried calling our great American Embassy and the Marine Sargent told me that he did not deem it to be an emergency. So you see we had no place to go. It is not like America where you would have just called a cab and gone to a nearby hotel. In Haiti if you just call a cab you might never be seen alive or dead again. I knew we could not go out on the street and survive until morning. So to make a long story short I finally found probably one of the very few honest police officers in Haiti and he finally got the Airport to agree to let us and about 15 other Haitians spend the night in the airport. We were not allowed to go anywhere but the check in area. There were a few wooden tables where they go through your luggage if they so desire and the check in area with the baggage scales. I managed to find one folding chair for Randy and He sat in it all night and I sat on a rolling luggage cart all night. Notice I said sat and did not say sleep. We spend the night making sure our new Haitian friends did not rob us or kill us there in the airport and also making sure that the rats did not carry us away. Because trust me I saw a rat that I was sure could have carried me on his back with little to no problem. Well by the time we finally arrived back home I had extra baggage with me in the form of bags under my eyes. I have never been one to use any sort of eye creams and such but trust me right then I would have given anything for some of the best eye cream I could have found. I am sure at that time I could have been a great spokes person for the product and been able to have given them great before and after pictures of the bags under my eyes. My girls were really shocked to see how we looked when we got home. Oh yes I forgot to say that by spending that night we missed our flight out of Miami and had to spend the next night in the Miami airport cause we then did not have enough money for a Miami Airport hotel.
